Founded in 2017, Michael Sousa Jewellery has flourished its way into the fashion & jewellery industry through its remarkable historical designs. Every design is a true work of art, with each design having a unique story and hidden message. For only the trained artistic eye to see. Astonishing brought to life by its remarkably skilled artisans. It takes the artisans up to 8 hours of manual work to complete one earring from the Dare to Rise Collection. Using the best exotic cords and fabrics such as leather, satin, paracord, and nylon cord waxed in 24k. gold to complete these wearable artworks.

Q: Where did you get the inspiration from to design these artworks?

I traveled a little which helped me a lot. I met new people we shared stories and eventually, I got inspired and that is how some designs originated. Then I simply worked them out, did a lot of research about the subjects I was inspired in, which was a journey in itself.

Q: Do you first draw your designs and then choose the materials? Or the way around? How do you proceed from the idea to the finished jewellery?

Interesting question, because with every design it is different. I usually just start drawing my idea, just a little sketch nothing special. And do repeat this process many times, I’m a perfectionist which does not always help but at a certain point I’m happy with the design and by then I already have some materials in my head which I want to use.

However, as said it really depends on the idea. For example, the new paracord bracelets came to life in a totally different way. I was having a conversation with some friends and we talked about World War II. And how the soldiers tried to find some joy and happiness while being in such a devastating environment. And it gave me an idea, and again did some research. And I found out that during WWII the soldiers used paracord to make friendship bracelets for each other. Which immediately got my attention. After digging some more I found out that paracord which is also known as parachute cord was very strong, after one jump it could simply be reused because of its structure. During the 82nd space shuttle mission astronauts even used it to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. In short, it was the perfect material to make strong long-during bracelets and bring that feeling of friendship back to the world.

Q: You mentioned in our prior conversation something about hidden messages in your designs? You already received some compliments from some well-known people in the industry. And it indeed sounds very mysterious can you tell us more about that.

Of course, I was very flattered when I received those compliments especially when coming from such well-renowned names. I see designing jewellery as something special. I often like to call jewellery “art that you can wear”. When designing you need, like every painter or sculpture, to have your own style. My style has indeed sometimes been described as mysterious, especially the designs which are limited edition or custom made. Most of the times people don’t see the hidden message until you tell them, and when you tell and show them they just cannot see it as before. Which for me is fascinating. Only a little group, can find and understand the “easter egg”.

Q: Are they held secret until someone finds them or do you disclose them?

No, most of them are described. But there are definitely some jewellery pieces that have a hidden message but I do not disclose it until someone finds it, which makes it for me even more special. To see how long it takes before someone discovers it. Challenging connoisseurs to find it, is simply magnificent.

Q: What do you want people to feel when wearing your jewellery?

To feel how strong, confident, beautiful, unique they are. After all, they wear a jewel that is not only bespoke but also has a story to tell. Almost every design I make can be customized. To give the people the opportunity to
influence the design in their own way to create their own jewel with their own story.

Q: When you say customized, how far does the customization go?

Limitless. People can customize in many ways, for some people using just some specific colors can refer to their culture, country, memory. Some gemstones because there are related to their zodiac sign also known as birthstones and I can give you a thousand examples. And if a certain design cannot be more customized because it would steer too much away from the main design. We just make a personal customized jewel for the client. That is according to me a real tribute to how 'unique' the jewel can become.

Q: Are you working on another collection now? Or will you take a break?

Well, I have some other projects going on. Besides being a designer, I’m an entrepreneur and I have other kinds of businesses that take a lot of my time. It is always tricky to find a balance between taking a break and growing your business. I finally found some balance, so I have been working hard but also enjoying life. I’m not worried about another collection as already have some ideas. Of course, I cannot disclose anything but for now I’ll let people enjoy this actual collection which will have more colors available in some months.
